2. Reduction of Use of Chemical Substances

Control of Chemical Substances

Regulations have been established for chemical substances that affect the environment and, for products, a procedure that uses a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS*1) to pre-evaluate new products has been introduced.

Since the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR*2) process was put into effect in April 2000, it has been confirmed that the quantity of target chemical substances used in our products is below required levels.

* 1 MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet):  This document identifies the chemical substances contained in products, their percentage contents, chemical properties such as melting and boiling points, their hazardous risks and harmful effects, and information on how to handle them safely.

* 2: PRTR method (Pollutant Release and Transfer Register):  This law regulates the amount of specified chemical substances that can be discharged into the environment and promotes control and reduction of pollutants. The law requires companies to analyze the quantities of hazardous chemical substances and waste products discharged into the air, water and soil that are likely to pollute the environment, and to report this information to the government.

Adoption of ECO-SOL MAX

The solvent inks used in our large-format printers have increasingly become better formulated for both end users and the environment, and the odors emitted by solvents have been reduced to acceptable levels* 3 . Roland mild solvent-based inks remain suitable for outdoor use, without requiring businesses to install special ventilation systems*4.

*3: Sensitivity to odor varies by individual.
*4: For indoor workshops, some form of ventilation is recommended.
